What is a Tick Value and how do I calculate the exact dollar movement per individual tick?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

Tick value is the minimum price fluctuation multiplied by the contract multiplier, giving the dollar gain or loss per tick move.

    How it works

Each CME product defines its own minimum tick increment and corresponding dollar value, published in official contract specifications.

    An example

ES moves in 0.25 ticks worth $12.50 each under its $50 multiplier.

    Risk & limitations

Tick values vary by product; verify specs to avoid miscalculating position risk.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
