How do sovereign central bank gold buying reserves manifest within institutional GC futures order accumulation?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

Central bank gold purchases, reported via IMF and World Gold Council data, show up as sustained institutional accumulation in COMEX GC futures open interest and large commercial long positions in CFTC data.

    How it works

Central banks typically buy physical gold through OTC and bullion bank channels, but hedging and arbitrage activity flows into COMEX futures, visible in CFTC Commitments of Traders reports as rising commercial longs.

    An example

Record central bank gold buying in 2022-2023 by China, Turkey, and India coincided with elevated commercial long positioning in CME GC futures data.

    Risk & limitations

CFTC data reflects US futures positioning only and may not fully capture OTC or physical central bank transactions occurring outside regulated exchanges.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
