What is the Soybean Crush Spread and how does it isolate the profit margins of processing raw soybeans into oil and meal?
By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice
The short answer
The Soybean Crush Spread isolates processing margins by comparing the combined value of soybean oil and meal futures against the cost of raw soybean futures used to produce them.
How it works
Processors buy soybean (ZS) futures and sell soybean oil (ZL) and soybean meal (ZM) futures to lock in a crush margin, hedging the spread between input costs and finished product values.
An example
A soybean processor executes a crush spread by buying ZS and selling ZL and ZM futures to protect profit margins before processing raw beans into oil and meal.
Risk & limitations
Crush margins can compress quickly if oil or meal demand weakens independently of raw soybean supply, requiring active spread monitoring.
