What is Backwardation and what physical supply deficits cause nearby agricultural months to trade at a premium?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

Backwardation occurs when nearby futures months trade above deferred months, signaling an immediate physical supply shortage that forces buyers to pay a premium for grain available now rather than later.

    How it works

Tight current-year supplies, strong immediate export or processing demand, or crop failure concerns can push nearby contracts above later months, inverting the normal storage-cost curve.

    An example

A severe drought reducing current-year corn supply can push the nearby ZC contract above deferred months as buyers compete for scarce immediate grain.

    Risk & limitations

Backwardation can reverse quickly once new harvest supplies arrive, so positions betting on sustained backwardation carry seasonal timing risk.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
