What is the difference between a Trend-Following CTA Algorithm and a Mean-Reversion Scalping execution system?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

Trend-following CTA algorithms hold positions over days to months riding sustained price direction, while mean-reversion scalping systems exploit rapid, small price oscillations around short-term averages.

    How it works

CTAs typically use longer-term moving averages or breakout signals with wider stops, whereas scalping systems require high trade frequency, tight spreads, and extremely low latency infrastructure to be viable.

    An example

A CTA follows multi-month trends; a scalper fades 1-minute noise.

    Risk & limitations

Both styles can experience extended losing periods.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
