Futures regulation

What is Dodd-Frank Act Title VII and how did it fundamentally overhaul the clearing transparency of over-the-counter swaps?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

Dodd-Frank Title VII mandated central clearing, exchange trading, and reporting for many over-the-counter swaps, increasing transparency in previously opaque derivatives markets.

    How it works

Passed in 2010, it expanded CFTC authority over swap dealers and major swap participants, requiring registration and margin rules for OTC derivatives.

    An example

Interest rate swaps must now clear through registered clearinghouses.

    Risk & limitations

Implementation phased in over years; some exemptions still apply.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
