Options mechanics

What is the difference between American-style options and European-style options regarding early exercise?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

American-style options can be exercised by the holder at any time before expiration, while European-style options can only be exercised at expiration itself, affecting early exercise strategy and risk.

    How it works

Most equity options traded on US exchanges are American-style, while most index options like SPX are European-style and cash-settled, per OCC and Cboe product specifications.

    An example

A trader holding an American-style equity call can exercise it the day before an ex-dividend date to capture the dividend, an action impossible with a European-style SPX option.

    Risk & limitations

Early exercise of American options forfeits remaining extrinsic value, so it is rarely optimal except in specific dividend-capture or deep-ITM scenarios reviewed with a broker first.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
