Why do deep ITM options exhibit a Delta near 1.0 and a Gamma near 0.0?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

Deep in-the-money options have a delta approaching 1.0 because they move almost dollar for dollar with the stock, and a gamma near 0.0 since that delta has little room left to change.

    How it works

This occurs because the option's price behavior converges with owning the underlying shares outright, leaving minimal extrinsic value and therefore minimal sensitivity to further delta acceleration.

    An example

A deep ITM XYZ call with a 0.95 delta behaves almost like owning 95 shares, and further stock moves change that delta only marginally due to its low gamma.

    Risk & limitations

Because deep ITM options cost more upfront in premium, they tie up more capital even though their percentage price swings resemble the underlying stock closely.
