When is it optimal to buy ITM options versus OTM options for directional swing plays?
By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice
The short answer
Many traders prefer ITM options for high-delta directional exposure with less time-decay risk, while OTM options suit higher-conviction, lower-cost leveraged bets; the choice depends on conviction, risk tolerance, and time horizon, not a fixed rule.
How it works
ITM contracts move more like the underlying share and retain more intrinsic value if wrong, while OTM contracts amplify percentage gains but decay faster and can expire worthless on modest moves.
An example
A trader expecting a steady 5% move over two weeks may buy a 0.70-delta ITM call, while one expecting a sharp earnings gap may choose a 0.30-delta OTM call for leverage.
Risk & limitations
OIC materials note no single strike selection is universally optimal; higher leverage from OTM options also raises the probability of total premium loss.
