Long calls & puts
What is the Rolling Strategy for a long call when you want to extend your time horizon?
By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice
The short answer
Rolling a long call forward means closing the existing contract and simultaneously opening a new one with a later expiration, typically for a net debit, to retain directional exposure while resetting the time-decay clock.
How it works
This is often done when the thesis remains intact but the current expiration is approaching and the option still holds meaningful extrinsic or intrinsic value worth preserving.
An example
A trader holding a March 50-strike call nearing expiration might sell it and buy a June 50 or 55-strike call to maintain upside exposure for several more months.
Risk & limitations
OIC notes that rolling adds transaction costs and a new premium outlay, and does not eliminate the risk that the underlying stock fails to move as expected.
