Long calls & puts

What are the structural benefits of using LEAPs calls instead of buying equity shares upfront?

    The short answer

LEAPS calls allow investors to gain long-term equity exposure while committing significantly less capital than buying shares outright, freeing cash for other uses while retaining defined, limited downside risk equal to the premium paid.

    How it works

Because LEAPS often have expirations one to two years out, they behave somewhat like a leveraged stand-in for stock ownership, though they do not pay dividends or carry shareholder voting rights.

    An example

Instead of spending $10,000 on 100 shares at $100, an investor might buy a LEAPS call for $1,500 that provides similar upside participation above the strike price.

    Risk & limitations

OCC disclosures note LEAPS still expire worthless if the stock fails to exceed the strike by expiration, and lack of dividend income can matter for long-term total return comparisons.
