How does a Spin-off corporate action alter the underlying deliverable asset package of an options contract?

    The short answer

When a company spins off a subsidiary, OCC adjusts outstanding options' deliverable to include shares of the new spin-off entity alongside the original stock, maintaining the option's original economic value.

    How it works

OCC typically issues an adjustment where one option contract becomes deliverable for 100 shares of the parent plus a proportional number of spin-off shares, based on the distribution ratio.

    An example

When a parent spins off a division at a 1-for-4 ratio, adjusted call options may deliver 100 parent shares plus 25 spin-off shares upon exercise.

    Risk & limitations

Adjusted spin-off options often trade with lower liquidity and wider spreads since market makers must reprice the composite deliverable package.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
