Corporate events & settlement

What is Cash Settlement and which index options (SPX, NDX, RUT) feature this non-physical clearing?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

Cash settlement means that upon exercise, the holder receives or pays the dollar difference between the strike and the index's settlement value rather than buying or selling actual securities, used by SPX, NDX, and RUT index options.

    How it works

Because these broad indexes comprise hundreds of components, physical delivery is impractical, so OCC settles the net cash value based on a special opening or closing calculation of the index.

    An example

A SPX call with a strike of 4500 exercised when settlement value is 4550 pays the holder $5,000 cash (50 points times the $100 multiplier) per contract.

    Risk & limitations

Settlement values for AM-settled index options can differ meaningfully from the prior day's closing quote, creating pricing surprises if traders assume PM close values apply.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
