What happens if a stock halts trading due to a pending regulatory news announcement while you hold options?
By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice
The short answer
If a stock is halted pending a material news announcement, trading in its listed options also halts simultaneously, and holders cannot open, close, exercise, or trade positions until both underlying and options resume trading.
How it works
Exchanges coordinate regulatory halts across all listed markets for a security, including its options, under Reg SHO and exchange halt rules, to prevent trading on asymmetric information before news is disseminated.
An example
A biotech halted pending FDA trial results will also see all its listed calls and puts frozen until the stock reopens for trading, often with a significant price gap.
Risk & limitations
Positions remain exposed to overnight or multi-day gap risk during a halt since no hedging or closing trades are possible in either the stock or its options.
Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
