What is an Exercise Cutoff Time and why does it extend past the official 4:00 PM stock market close?
By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice
The short answer
The exercise cutoff is the deadline, typically 5:30pm ET, by which brokers must submit exercise instructions to OCC, extending roughly 90 minutes past the 4:00pm stock market close to allow evaluation of after-hours news.
How it works
This extended window lets holders of expiring options decide on exercise after seeing late-breaking news, earnings releases, or after-hours price action that could change an option's moneyness.
An example
A trader holding a near-the-money option can watch after-hours trading until just before the broker's internal cutoff, often earlier than OCC's 5:30pm deadline, before deciding to exercise.
Risk & limitations
Individual brokers set their own earlier internal cutoff times for customer exercise instructions, often well before OCC's official deadline, so traders must confirm their specific broker's deadline.
Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
