How do foreign holiday schedules create localized pricing distortions in internationally linked ADR options?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

ADR options can experience pricing distortions when foreign exchange holidays close the underlying home-market stock while US markets and ADR options remain open, creating stale pricing and reduced hedging liquidity for market makers.

    How it works

Market makers widen ADR option spreads on days the foreign home exchange is closed since they cannot hedge via the underlying ordinary shares, relying instead on proxy futures or currency-adjusted estimates.

    An example

If a Japanese company's Tokyo listing is closed for a local holiday, US-listed ADR options on that company may show wider spreads and less reliable pricing that day.

    Risk & limitations

Traders should check both US and foreign market holiday calendars before trading ADR options to avoid unexpectedly poor liquidity and execution quality.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
