Options accounts & routing

What criteria must a retail trader fulfill to be granted permission to trade Naked Options (Level 5)?

    The short answer

To trade naked options, brokers typically require demonstrated extensive options trading experience, a large minimum net worth and liquid net worth, margin account approval, and acknowledgment of the unlimited risk disclosure under FINRA suitability rules.

    How it works

FINRA Rule 2360 requires member firms to determine a customer's suitability for uncovered option writing based on investment objectives, experience, and financial resources before approving the highest trading tier.

    An example

A broker might require at least three to five years of options experience and six-figure liquid net worth before approving a retail account for uncovered index option writing.

    Risk & limitations

Naked option writing carries theoretically unlimited loss potential on short calls and substantial loss potential on short puts, and brokers can force liquidation if margin requirements are breached.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
