How do I filter out false breakouts during low-volume midday lunch hours?

    The short answer

Midday hours (roughly 11:30am-2:00pm ET) typically see reduced volume and liquidity, which increases the frequency of false breakouts as fewer participants confirm price moves.

    How it works

Traders often tighten position sizing, widen filters requiring higher relative volume, or simply avoid new breakout entries during this lower-liquidity window.

    An example

A breakout above resistance at 12:30pm on only 20% of the stock's average volume pace may be more likely to fail than the same move during the opening hour.

    Risk & limitations

Lower liquidity during midday can also widen spreads and increase slippage, making stop-loss execution less reliable even if the broader read is correct.
