What is the TRIN (Short-Term Trading Index) and how does it signal intraday market capitulation?
By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice
The short answer
TRIN (Arms Index) compares the ratio of advancing to declining stocks against the ratio of advancing to declining volume, serving as a gauge of overall market breadth and potential capitulation.
How it works
A TRIN reading significantly above 2.0 is traditionally viewed as a sign of panic selling and potential oversold conditions, while readings well below 1.0 may suggest overbought conditions.
An example
A TRIN spike to 3.0 during a sharp market decline has historically coincided with short-term selling climaxes in some market cycles.
Risk & limitations
TRIN can give misleading signals during low-volume sessions or structural market shifts, and extreme readings do not guarantee an immediate reversal.
