Swing trading

How do I evaluate a stock's liquidity profile to ensure safe entry/exit of million-dollar swing positions?

    The short answer

Evaluating liquidity for large swing positions involves examining average daily dollar volume, bid-ask spreads, and float size to ensure a position can be entered or exited without materially moving the price.

    How it works

Traders often cap their position size at a small percentage (e.g., 5-10%) of a stock's average daily volume to avoid excessive market impact when building or unwinding a million-dollar position.

    An example

A stock averaging $50 million in daily dollar volume could likely absorb a $2 million position with manageable slippage, whereas a thinly traded $2 million-volume stock could not.

    Risk & limitations

Liquidity can deteriorate sharply during market stress even for normally liquid names, so historical average volume is not a guarantee of future executable liquidity.
