Technical analysis

What is the clinical difference between technical analysis and fundamental analysis?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

Technical analysis studies price and volume patterns to forecast future price movement, while fundamental analysis evaluates a company's financial statements, earnings, and economic conditions to estimate its intrinsic value.

    How it works

Technical analysts focus on charts, indicators, and market psychology for timing entries/exits, whereas fundamental analysts examine metrics like revenue, earnings, and competitive position for longer-term investment decisions.

    An example

A fundamental analyst might buy a stock because of strong earnings growth, while a technical analyst might buy the same stock because it broke above resistance on high volume.

    Risk & limitations

Relying exclusively on one approach while ignoring the other can mean missing important risk signals the other method would reveal.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
