What is the VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price) and why do institutional traders respect it?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

VWAP calculates the average price a security has traded at throughout the day, weighted by volume, giving a benchmark institutional traders use to assess whether their executions beat or lagged the market's average.

    How it works

Institutions often aim to execute large orders near or better than VWAP to minimize market impact, and many algorithmic strategies target VWAP as a performance benchmark for trade execution quality.

    An example

A fund manager buying shares below the day's VWAP can claim favorable execution relative to the market's volume-weighted average price for that session.

    Risk & limitations

VWAP resets daily and is a lagging, intraday-only benchmark; it shouldn't be treated as a predictive signal for future price direction.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
