How do I read an options-specific Margin Call notice and what is the timeframe to rectify the capital shortfall?

By Easy Money Scanner · Educational reference · Not investment advice

    The short answer

An options-specific margin call notifies the trader their account equity has fallen below maintenance requirements due to adverse option position moves, typically requiring a deposit or position reduction within a broker-set deadline, often two to five business days.

    How it works

Brokers calculate the deficiency and specify either a cash deposit, transfer of marginable securities, or closing/reducing positions to restore compliance with FINRA Rule 4210 minimums.

    An example

A trader with a short naked put that moves deep in-the-money might receive a margin call requiring an additional $5,000 deposit within three business days or facing forced liquidation.

    Risk & limitations

Brokers can liquidate positions without prior notice if they determine risk is too high, even before the stated margin call deadline expires, per standard margin agreement terms.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
