How do I avoid hindsight bias when reviewing chart patterns after the market has closed?

    The short answer

Hindsight bias is reduced by documenting trade rationale and confidence level at the moment of entry, before the outcome is known, to avoid rewriting the narrative afterward.

    How it works

Comparing pre-trade notes to post-trade conclusions helps traders see whether a pattern was truly predictable or only appears obvious after the fact due to selective memory.

    An example

A trader might record 'uncertain, 50/50 setup' before entry, and later recall it as 'an obvious trade' only to be corrected by checking the original note.

    Risk & limitations

Even with documentation, memory and self-assessment remain imperfect; using a timestamped journal entry is more reliable than recollection alone.

Examples are hypothetical, not trade recommendations. US contract and regulatory references do not automatically apply in Canada. Rules, margin requirements and broker policies can change; confirm them with the relevant authority and your broker.
